We continue to see issues with the quality of food, supplements, and medications grabbing the news.

Just recently a non-profit group (cleanlabelproject.org) published a study on Protein Powders having heavy metal contaminants in them. This is extremely concerning when you are trying to do something beneficial for your health and you are actually causing more harm. However, it may be premature and there are some questions if there was any financial tampering in the Protein Powder study since Clean Label Project has refused to release the actual report. Either way, the issues raised still illustrate the importance of knowing where your supplements, medications, and food are coming from.

How can you tell if your medications, supplements or food are coming from a legitimate source and really contain the ingredients listed?

Make sure there is GMP certification and the company uses an independent lab to test the raw materials and the actual dosages of the product.

Counterfeit Supplement Products

Furthermore, there is a concern about falsely labeled products. We saw in 2015 large “cheap” retail brands came under fire for having no material in their products but simply fillers (GNC, Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens accused of selling adulterated ‘herbals’).

Finally, online vendors like Amazon.com have more and more vendors using counterfeit products which up to 25% may be coming from China. These vendors are selling expired products or tampering with the product by using a reputable company’s bottle and adding filler capsule, then resealing the bottles (The Fake Supplement Issue No One Is Talking About – Beware of Amazon).

Please be safe out there.
